So when <strong>Ashley \u2018MAD BASS\u2019 Burrell<\/strong> told me that he was going to cut up the <strong>DD-Z18<\/strong> my heart nearly stopped, I had a head full of questions and starting ranting on like some sort of madman looking for any excuse for <strong>Ashley<\/strong> not to cut up the <strong>Z18<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After what felt like a four hour conversation\/debate <strong>Ashley<\/strong> convinced me that what he was going to do was for the greater good of the <strong>Z18<\/strong> and&nbsp;reassured me that he hadn\u2019t become a sick &amp; twisted <strong>Sub-Woofer<\/strong> serial killer! It was soon after that said conversation that <strong>Ashley<\/strong> unpacked the replacement cone for the <strong>Z18<\/strong>, this was when things started to make sense as the new cones Spider Suspension for the <strong>Z18<\/strong> was twice as thick as the original one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_1-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_1-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_1-1-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Cone\/Coil replacement is pretty much the same on most <strong>Sub-Woofers<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to go into as much depth as last time, but if you want to read a more in depth write up on Cone\/Coil repairs <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/dd-audio-sub-woofer-repairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">CLICK HERE<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First thing on the cards for <strong>Ashley<\/strong> was to cut out the Dust-Cap and Cone. As you can see above <strong>Ashley<\/strong> took his time to cut the Carbon-Fibre Dust-Cap out and did so very carefully since he wanted to re-use it on the new Cone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_2-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_2-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_2-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_2-1-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This time round <strong>Ashley<\/strong> invested in some much needed safety gear since the fumes that come off the glue and rubber is very toxic. <strong>Ashley<\/strong> has also made up a plug of sorts to cover the top of the <strong>Z18\u2019s<\/strong> motor to minimise the amount of&nbsp;aluminium dust that contacts the motor, he used a&nbsp;vacuum to remove the dust as he was carefully&nbsp;grinding&nbsp;away all the excess glue and rubber off the <strong>Sub-Woofer<\/strong> basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_3-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_3-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_3-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_3-1-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And as you can see in the photo above that <strong>Ashley\u2019s<\/strong> patience paid off and the surface of the basket was almost perfectly smooth, also take note of the <strong>Z18\u2019s<\/strong> unique motor and Coil-pole as this is very rarely seen by anybody outside of <strong>DD Audio.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_4-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the clean up of the <strong>Sub-Woofer<\/strong> basket it was time to glue the new Cone\/Coil and Spider Suspension into place and as easy as it looks to glue a Cone into place it actually is quite&nbsp;finicky and requires the person doing so to act quickly as explained in the original <strong>Sub-Woofer<\/strong> repair Blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_5.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hifihq.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Z18_5-360x240.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The end product as seen here is like new, well it pretty much is a new <strong>Sub-Woofer<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ok, time to explain a few things now. By now you are most likely going \u201cThis is cool, but why would you cut up a seven thousand dollar <strong>Sub-Woofer<\/strong>?\u201d or \u201cWhat was wrong with it?\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, <strong>Ashley<\/strong> had brought over a special Cone\/Coil with a SPL ES (Extra Stiff) Spider Suspension for the <strong>Z18<\/strong> earlier on in the year with the intention of swapping it over eventually. But before doing the swap he wanted to hear the <strong>Z18<\/strong> first and why not too, its not like you would buy a <strong>Z18<\/strong> and not at least listen to it for a few hundred hours before cutting it up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Final product from this is a <strong>Sub-Woofer<\/strong> that will be completely bulletproof (Not literally, please don\u2019t shoot it!) and if the new <strong>DD-9518-D2<\/strong> SC (Supercharged) ES that is in <strong>ABTEC3<\/strong> is anything to go by the <strong>Z18<\/strong> ES will be something\u00a0phenomenal!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Its not very often we do cone replacement\u2019s on DD Audio Sub-Woofers yet alone on a DD-Z18!
